Group Size Buffers against Energetic Stress in Honeybee Workers (Apis mellifera)

چکیده

Individuals of the Western honeybee species, Apis mellifera, live in large groups thousands worker bees, a queen, and few drones. Workers interact frequently with related individuals while performing various tasks. Although it is well understood why under which conditions sociality can evolve, consequences for living permanent are less understood. As solitary species become stressed when kept at high density, might be opposite obligate social species. Here, I use an experimental laboratory set-up to study effect varying group sizes on magnitude within-group variance stress responses towards energetic heat stress. While only weak difference was found response as function size, showed statistically significant positive relationship size glucose/trehalose ratio, marker The marker, hsp70AB gene expression, did not show any size. seem benefit from adaptations living, e.g., buffering against stress, especially higher density individuals. infections immune system activation isolated discussed.

Senescence and learning in honeybee (Apis mellifera) workers.

Foraging by honeybee workers was investigated from the moment of the first foraging flight until death. To minimise the influence of factors other than senescence the foragers were trained to collect food from an artificial flower close to their hive. During each foraging trip the workers repeatedly visited an artificial flower, collecting one microlitre of 50% sugar solution per visit. During ...

Thermal learning in the honeybee, Apis mellifera.

Honeybee foragers are exposed to thermal stimuli when collecting food outside and receiving food rewards inside the nest. In both contexts, there is an opportunity for foragers to associate warmth with food rewards. However, honeybee thermal learning is poorly understood. Using an associative learning paradigm (the proboscis extension reflex), we show that honeybees can learn to associate a nec...

Resonance frequencies of honeybee (Apis mellifera) wings.

During flight, insect wings bend and twist under the influence of aerodynamic and inertial forces. We tested whether wing resonance of honeybees (Apis mellifera) matches the wingbeat frequency, against the 'stiff element' hypothesis that the wing's first longitudinal mode exceeds the wingbeat frequency. Six bees were immobilized with their right wing pair outspread, and stimulated with a shaker...

Proprioceptors involved in stinging response of the honeybee, Apis mellifera.

Two types of mechanosensitive proprioceptor organ are present on the stinging apparatus of the honeybee: campaniform sensilla and mechanosensory hairplates. The campaniform sensilla are located on the surface of the tapering sting-shaft, which comprises an unpaired stylet and paired lancets. Each sensillum on the lancet differs from that on the stylet in terms of their topography and external m...

Lateralization of Olfaction in the Honeybee Apis mellifera

Lateralization of function is a well-known phenomenon in humans. The two hemispheres of the human brain are functionally specialized such that certain cognitive skills, such as language or musical ability, conspecific recognition, and even emotional responses, are mediated by one hemisphere more than the other [1, 2]. Studies over the past 30 years suggest that lateralization occurs in other ve...
